Coventry City won promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, after Bobby Thomas fired home a late equaliser away at Blackburn Rovers on Friday to secure an all-important point for Frank Lampard’s side.

At the other end of the table, Leicester City’s status as a League One club is all but confirmed after suffering a 1-0 defeat on the road at Portsmouth.

The result means that the Foxes sit eight points adrift of safety, and their relegation will be confirmed should they fail to beat Hull City on Tuesday night, marking just their second season in the third tier in the club’s history, just 10 years after their fairytale Premier League title win.

The battle for automatic promotion via second place will now go down to the wire following Middlesbrough’s 2-2 draw away at Ipswich Town on Sunday.

It means Ipswich, Millwall, Southampton and Boro are just three points apart heading into the final fixtures of the season.

League One

In League One, Cardiff City won promotion to the Championship in extraordinary circumstances.

The Bluebirds recorded a 3-1 victory away at Reading, but had to wait to celebrate until Exeter City goalkeeper Jack Bycroft scored a 96th-minute equaliser against Stockport County, confirming the Welsh outfit’s return to the Championship for next season.

And Cardiff could have their say in the relegation battle this Wednesday as they host Port Vale, who could join Rotherham United and Northampton Town in the fourth tier should they fail to beat the Bluebirds.

League Two

In League Two, Bromley’s unbelievable journey continues, as they secured promotion to the third tier after Barnet beat Notts County 2-1 at the weekend.

It’s just their second season in the Football League after coming up from the National League in the 2023/24 campaign, and they could be facing off against Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday next year.

Milton Keynes Dons will secure promotion if they beat Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, while Cambridge United can join them in the next tier if results go their way.

Finally, there was a massive win for Harrogate Town at the weekend, where a 99th-minute winning goal from Jacob Slater against Colchester United put them back in the battle for survival.

There are now just two points separating Crawley Town, Tranmere Rovers, Newport County, Barrow and Harrogate at the bottom of the division.
