Teddy Sheringham: West Ham are in for a long hard Championship season

West Ham got off the mark in the Championship on Tuesday night winning their first game of the campaign in style with a 4-2 victory over fellow relegated outfit Wolves.

The Hammers have seen many high profile departures from the club this summer with the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Matheus Fernandes leaving for inflated transfer fees.

But the club looked to have turned a corner with a dominant home performance and manager Nuno Espirito Santo will hope the club can kick on their promotion push.

Former West Ham man Teddy Sheringham, believes the club must be prepared for a long hard Championship season in order to gain an immediate Premier League return.

In an exclusive interview with BetVictor, Sheringham said “We’ve seen already that it won’t be easy for West Ham.

“There’ll be ups and downs throughout the season, you don’t want to fall too far away from the pack early on. 

“As a team that’s hopefully competing in the top half or the top four, you need to establish yourself up there, then you’re allowed to have a little blip.

“If you’re down near the bottom and have a poor spell, the distance to the top becomes a very long way. 

“But we’ve all seen over the years that a decent Championship side can put a real run of form together at any stage. 

“You string ten games together where you win nine and draw one, and suddenly you’ve come from nowhere. It’s a long, hard season and it’ll be no different for West Ham.”

Results

Sheringham also had compliments for the club’s rivals Millwall and their manager Alex Neil.

“I really like what’s going on at Millwall. It seems like they’ve got that same type of Scottish manager again that we had when we enjoyed such success.

“John Docherty getting us from the Championship to the old First Division for the first time in the club’s history provided unbelievable moments for everyone concerned with the club.

“It was great to be involved in, and the current side looks like they’ve got that same unity in the camp. The way they go about things is very workmanlike, similar to Everton. 

“They know what’s expected. Alex Neil knows what the crowd wants to see from their team and he gives it to them, just like John Docherty did. He moulded a side that was hardworking but had a little bit of flair.

“The main part of it is that you dig in for each other and get results together. That’s exactly what the supporters want to see, and that’s exactly what they’ve been giving over the time Alex Neil has been in there.”
