In this week’s edition of The Football League Paper Podcast, Matt Badcock is joined by Football League Paper Chief Writer Chris Dunlavy and John Lyons, Football League Paper Editor, to talk through all the latest in the EFL.
We discuss Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation to League One, which was confirmed following their 2-1 defeat to bitter city rivals Sheffield United in the Steel City derby, with the Blades emerging triumphant despite Kalvin Phillips’ sending off in the second half.
After a slight wobble, Coventry City returned to form, extending their lead at the top of the table to nine points with a 2-0 victory at West Brom, who themselves are dangerously close to the drop zone, with just one point separating them from Leicester City in 22nd place.
The Baggies and Foxes slipped deeper into trouble as Portsmouth won 3-1 at Millwall and Blackburn Rovers followed up their 3-1 victory over QPR with a dramatic win against local rivals Preston last Friday, strengthening their push for survival.
Wrexham tightened their grip on a play-off spot by earning a crucial three points in a 5-3 win over Ipswich Town.
Elsewhere
League One
Elsewhere, in League One, Plymouth Argyle recorded a 5-2 win at home to Cardiff City, a first defeat in 13 games for the Bluebirds. Are the Pilgrims in with a shout of the play-offs?
There was also a big win for Leyton Orient at Northampton, as Richie Wellens’ side went two points clear of the relegation zone following a 2-1 win, with Dom Ballard once again on the scoresheet.
Exeter City’s Jayden Wareham netted an eighth-minute hat-trick on the road at Peterborough United, but it wasn’t enough to secure all three points as the Posh fought back to earn a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw.
League Two
Finally, in League Two, there were wins for Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury Town, who have now won four in a row under Gavin Cowan, and Cheltenham Town, with Newport County, Harrogate Town, Crawley Town and Barrow looking destined to battle it out for survival.
Mat Sadler’s tenure at Walsall looks increasingly under pressure as their 2-0 defeat to MK Dons on Monday means that they have only picked up seven points from eight games in 2026.
