Shrewsbury ban two fans after ‘vile’ chants at Liverpool tie

Shrewsbury Town have handed two individuals bans from attending their matches for a total of eight years following “vile” chants at January’s FA Cup tie at Liverpool.

The club said a “small number” of supporters were involved in the songs before the game at Anfield.

Videos emerged of Shrewsbury fans in Liverpool city centre mocking the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. The disaster led to 97 supporters dying.

An investigation into the incident by the club is continuing.

A club statement said: “As a club we do not condone and will not tolerate any behaviour that breaches our supporter code of conduct and brings our good name into disrepute.”

After the 4-1 defeat on January 9th 2022, Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne took to Twitter to voice his disapproval at the chants.

Since stadiums reopened, there has been an increased number of anti-Hillsborough chanting by opposing supporters at Anfield.
