Rams wrap up Wilson deal

Derby have agreed a deal to bring young Manchester United forward James Wilson to the club on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old striker spent much of last season on loan at Brighton, joining in November and scoring five goals in 28 appearances.

Wilson helped the Seagulls come third in the league and scored both home and away against Derby, but struggled with illness and fitness throughout his spell.

Rams boss Nigel Pearson said: “We’re delighted to have agreed to bring James Wilson the club on a season-long loan.

“He is an energetic player who will add to our existing attacking options.”

Wilson, who came through the academy at Old Trafford, has made 20 first team appearances for the Red Devils, scoring twice on his debut against Hull.

However, with Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic ahead of him in the pecking order, his move to Derby will hopefully provide some first-team action for the player capped at under-16, 19, 20 and 21 level for England.

Pearson said: “I hope that this loan deal will prove to be mutually beneficial for all parties and I would like to place on record our thanks to Manchester United for allowing James to join us.”
