Stevenage wins 3-1 against Newport County

AFTER losing to Doncaster – which is now at the top of the League Table with 52 points – due to an own goal in the 84th minute by Fraser Franks, on Saturday 7th Stevenage won 3-1 against Newport County. Matt Godden scored his 11th goal of the season during the game, in which the Hertfordshire team showed to be strong, and now occupies 13th place with 33 points. On Saturday 14th Stevenage will play against Plymouth Argyle – who recently signed Southend United’s Jakub Sokolikin – in Devon, who are second in the table with 48 points. Even so, there’s a chance that the team led by Darren Sarll will score some goals.

Since the departure of Teddy Sheringham, who in spite of not managing the team any longer has shown to be great at other activities, Stevenage has had its ups and downs, yet showing to be on a steady season. Teddy Sheringham had been the attacking coach of West Ham United in 2014 and in 2015 he took the first managerial role with Boro, following Graham Westley. He left the team in February 2016. When Sarll took over and following six defeats, football manager and former player Glenn Roeder was brought in as an advisor to help him guide the team, so the mixture of energy and experience eventually helped Stevenage improve its game.

The season ended with Boro in 18^th position, which is when Sarll was finally named permanent coach. In reference to the players, whereas last season Michael Tongue and Fraser Franks were having good campaigns, currently stars include Godden, Walker, Hyde, Kennedy and Liburd (who has been praised by the coach on more than one occasion) in the front line, and Ntlhe, Wilkinson and Henry as defenders. Jones seems to be the steady choice as goalkeeper. In addition to this, midfielder Dale Gorman recently signed a better deal so he will keep on playing in League Two for two more years. The season is not over yet and Stevenage still has time to climb up the table, so we will have to see how steady its game is in the following matches.
