A closer look at the Football League’s Team of the Season

The Football League Team of the Season was announced at last night’s Football League Awards. The team represents the best performing eleven players from across the three Football League divisions this year.

Goalkeeper

Adam Smith (Northampton Town)

After joining the Cobblers over the summer the 23-year-old has had a superb season, keeping 13 clean sheets and conceding just 39 goals.

Defenders

The 35-year-old has been a calming influence in Brighton’s back line this season as the Seagulls look to gain automatic promotion. Bruno netted his first goal of the season over the weekend, crashing home an effort in the 5-0 demolition of Fulham.

George Friend (Middlesbrough)

Friend is another defender who has helped his side move towards the summit of the Championship table. Middlesbrough have conceded the fewest Championship goals this season (27) and that is in no small part down to the 28-year-old’s sterling performances.

Craig Morgan (Wigan Athletic)

The Wigan captain has helped the League One leaders to a brilliant 15 clean sheets this season. The former Rotherham man has also contributed at the other end of the pitch, chipping in with two goals.

Daniel Ayala (Middlesbrough)

The center-back has won many plaudits for his brilliant performances in the Middlesbrough back line this season. The former Sevilla trainee has helped his side only concede a mere seven league goals at home this season as they march towards the Premier League.

Midfielders

Alan Judge (Brentford)

Judge has been one of the standout performers this season, finding the net 14 times and providing 11 assists, which is the highest number of any Championship player.

Bradley Dack (Gillingham)

Dack picked up the League One Player of the Year award last night after playing a key role in Gillingham’s push for promotion this season. The 23-year-old has won plaudits by netting 15 goals this campaign and chipping in with nine assists.

Joey Barton (Burnley)

The 33-year-old has really impressed after joining the Clarets on a free transfer over the summer. Barton has played 36 games this season and has consistently been a driving force in midfield as Burnley look to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

Strikers

Kemar Roofe (Oxford United)

After joining the club over the summer, Roofe has netted 23 goals to help The U’s establish themselves in the automatic promotion places. This superb form helped the striker win the League Two Player of the Year award last night.

Nicky Ajose (Swindon Town)

The 24-year-old striker joined Swindon in the summer on a free transfer after being released by Leeds and has become an instant hit at The County Ground. Ajose has scored 22 league goals to make him League One’s top goalscorer and has currently netted nine goals in his last ten games.

Andre Gray (Burnley)

The Championship Player of the Year has seemingly felt little pressure after his £9 million move from Brentford over the summer. The 24-year-old has netted 22 times for the Clarets to help them move into the automatic promotion places.
