Bury squad to pay for flights home from Portsmouth

Promotion-chasing Bury face Portsmouth on Saturday and manager David Flitcroft has revealed that the players have contributed to flights to take them to and from Fratton Park, avoiding a five-hour coach journey.

In an effort to arrive feeling fresh on the south coast, the squad will pay for the return flights from Manchester to Southampton Airport, which will cost £59 (£119.76 in total), and land on Friday.

“The players have contributed to the flights home,” Flitcroft said.

“That’s how committed this group are to doing the right thing and preparing.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do but these players are driven to keep pushing,” the Bury boss added.

After securing a vital win against 2nd-placed rivals Shrewsbury on Tuesday, the Shakers now have a game in hand over Wycombe Wanderers with four points separating the two clubs.

“We want to keep applying pressure to the top teams, it’s something we’ve done fantastically well,” Flitcroft stated, having guided his side to eight wins out of their last ten including victories in all of their recent away fixtures.

“All we can do is our business. Whatever happens at any ground we can’t be affected, so we’re focusing on us.”

Promotion would mark a swift turnaround in fortunes for the Lancashire club who were relegated from League One in 2013 after succumbing to a debt crisis that left them on the brink of liquidation.
