Alan Pardew linked to vacant post at AFC Wimbledon

Alan Pardew is reported to be interested in taking charge of AFC Wimbledon, following the departure of manager Glyn Hodges last week.

Wimbledon-born Pardew is currently working as technical director of Bulgarian club CSKA Sofia – following consecutive poor spells at West Bromwich Albion and Dutch side ADO Den Haag which ended in April 2020.

The Dons currently stand 21st in the League One, with the fan run club yet to register a win since their 2-1 result over Peterborough United on the 2 December. This poor run of form lead to Hodges, by mutual consent, leaving the club during the past week.

AFC Wimbledon CEO Joe Palmer said on Hodge’s leaving the club: “It is with a genuinely heavy heart that I have to announce that we have parted company with Glyn.

“After a strong start to the season when the team was arguably over-performing, the recent run of results left us in a difficult position. We need to do everything to ensure our survival in League One and after a brief chat Glyn and I have agreed that a parting of the ways today is in the best interests of Wimbledon

“I think it says it all about the man and his love for the club that we were able to come to this decision together. I want to place on record my thanks to Glyn and Nick for their efforts in my time here, and I wish them both every success in the future. Glyn’s service to Wimbledon goes back a long way and he leaves the club today with our thanks for all he has done for us over the years, as player, coach and manager.”

AFC Wimbledon in a club statement have told supporters that they have had “respected managers” who have “immense experience” apply for the now vacant manager’s role.

“The club is proud to be an equal opportunities employer and welcomes all applications irrespective of race, gender and age.”

“Indeed, a considerable number of applications have already been received, many from respected managers with immense experience in the game.”

Pardew, 59, has a wealth of experience at the top end of management, with him taking charge of two of the countries most iconic clubs in West Ham and Newcastle United.

The highlights of Pardew’s managerial career include reaching two FA Cup finals – with both West Ham and Crystal Palace – as well as achieving a fifth placed finish in the 2011/12 Premier League season and reaching a Europa League quarter final whilst manager of Newcastle United.

He also achieved promotion from the England‘s third division with Reading during the 2001-2 season.
