The charitable Lions supporters have topped the Cancer Deadline Day table.
Millwall supporters have romped to victory in the Cancer Deadline Day league – raising £11,214, fellow Championship side Brentford FC finished runners up and raised a total of £5,180.
The donated £28,000 will be split evenly with the following charities: Breast Cancer Now, CLIC Sargent, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pancreatic Cancer UK, Prostate Cancer UK, The Ruth Strauss Foundation, Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Teenage Cancer Trust
84-year-old Millwall supporter Charlie Harris, who has terminal cancer. Has donated £400 on behalf of Millwall and said: “As a lifetime supporter of Millwall, starting in the 50s, I give this donation in the hope that a cure will be found one day.”
A large number of Millwall's first team and coaching staff have donated and have helped by using their social media platforms to draw attention to the initiative.
Millwall CEO Steve Kavanagh said on the club's generosity: “It is immensely impressive, though not remotely surprising, that the Millwall family has yet again come together and excelled itself with this important fundraising initiative. Cancer is an illness which has impacted so many in society and, speaking as someone who has lost both parents to the disease, it makes me so incredibly proud to work at this wonderful football club which continues to go above and beyond when duty calls.
“I'd like to thank all the fans, players and staff who have contributed, and indeed to all those at other clubs who have helped to raise a fantastic total for a variety of cancer charities. Football once more shows just how powerful a force for good it is.”
Although the giving table closed when the transfer window shut In England at 11pm on deadline day, supporters are still able to make a donation by visiting www.cancerdeadlineday.org. Donations can be made until the end of Thursday 4th February, World Cancer Day.
