Boro’s Wing signs contract extension

Lewis Wing has signed a new deal at Middlesbrough which will keep him on Teesside for another two years

Middlesbrough midfielder Lewis Wing has signed a contract extension to remain at the club until 2019.

Wing has only made two EFL Cup appearances since joining Boro from Northern League Division One side Shildon in the summer but is happy with his progress so far.

“I’m delighted to sign a contract extension at Boro,” said Wing.

“This was a great move for me in the summer so I’m really pleased that I’ve been able to extend my time here.

“It’s been fantastic for me being involved with the first team and I’ve been really grateful to get the opportunity with a good bunch of lads.

“Now I’m just focusing on continuing to improve because it’s been a great year for me so far.”

The 22-year-old made his first-team debut as a substitute in Boro’s 3-0 win at home to Scunthorpe before starting in their two goal triumph away at Aston Villa.

And manager Garry Monk is hoping Wing can set a precedent for more young players to forge their way through to the first team.

“We’re pleased to see Lewis sign a new contract,” said Monk.

“He has had a taste of the first team already this season and he knows he has to keep working hard and continue his development as a player.

“I’ve said since day one that I want there to be a pathway for young players. I’ve tried to do the same wherever I’ve been and the development of young players has been an important part of the fabric of this club and is important to us,” he said.
