Morecambe chairman puts club up for sale

Long-standing Morecambe chairman Peter McGuigan has placed the club on the market after 16 years at the helm of the League Two side.

McGuigan cited the need for a ‘new owner to take the club forward’, with the club currently in 18th position in no immediate threat of relegation and lying 16 points off the play-off places.

In a statement released by the club, McGuigan said: “Having been chairman for 16 years, I feel the time is right for a new owner to take the club forward and build on a strong platform that exists today.

“The club moved into a new purpose-built wholly owned stadium in August 2010 and is virtually debt free. There is an opportunity to develop the ground further with a new office block, as well as a hotel adjacent to the stadium. These exciting developments will assist in securing the long-term financial viability of the club,” McGuigan said.

The statement also noted: “At present we are looking for expressions of interests from individuals who have the financial ability to take this club further. We will require a complete open book approach from all concerned to ensure the best for the club. Any interested parties should contact Nigel Adams at the club who is managing the process on behalf of the board.”

Promoted to the Football League under Sammy McIlroy in 2007, Morecambe recorded their best finish in League Two for six years when they finished 11th last season.
