Paul Lambert leaves Wolves after seven months in charge

Championship side Wolves have agreed to part company with Paul Lambert following a footballing review at the club.

The 47-year-old was only in charge at Molineux for seven months, and is expected to be replaced by former Porto and Valencia boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Lambert’s position at the club had been in doubt since the end of the season, after the Scot voiced his concern over the involvement owner’s Fosun had with recruitment.

Fosun have had a close working relationship with Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes since they bought the club in July last year, with many of their 12 summer signings arranged between the Chinese owner’s and Mendes.

However, a number of those recruits struggled in the Championship, with the obvious exception of record signing Helder Costa, and Lambert publicly said he wanted to sign British players ahead of next season.

Having been appointed as Walter Zenga’s successor on Bonfire Night, the former Norwich boss was at the helm for 33 games and endured a mixed spell.

FA Cup wins at Stoke and Liverpool were highlights, but five successive defeats in February produced fears of a relegation battle, before Wolves finally secured safety and finished 15th in the second tier.

With 14 wins, 14 losses and five draws, Lambert, and his coaching staff, leave the club as Wolves look to appoint their seventh manager in less than six years.
