Prior to his double in Birmingham City’s 4-1 demolition of Norwich City last weekend, Marvin Ducksch had largely failed to justify the hype that greeted his £1.7m transfer from Werder Bremen.
Signed in August following the Blues’ failed pursuit of Chuba Akpom, the 31-year-old striker had averaged 17 goal contributions per season over the previous three Bundesliga campaigns and won two caps for Germany.
So outraged were his German club’s supporters by his cut-price departure that sporting director Clemens Fritz felt compelled to publicly explain the decision.
