Holmes worked with Blades boss Chris Wilder when both were at Northampton, and the former Portsmouth player is thought to be keen on a move to last season’s League One champions after they submitted a bid for his services last month.
The 20-year-old, who can operate across the backline and in midfield but is most comfortable at right-back, becomes Chris Wilder’s third signing of the transfer window.
