WISHFUL thinking often obscures good judgement, so let’s be honest about the catastrophe engulfing our national game.
Supporters were never going to fill stadiums by October. Or Christmas, for that matter. Even in July, with daily cases of Covid-19 down to treble figures, there was more chance of Gareth Bale winning Real Madrid’s Player of the Year.
Hindsight? Hardly. In April, the Guardian invited several doctors to speculate on when spectators would return. Without a vaccine or widespread immunity, they all said it would be impossible.
