After banging in the goals for the likes of Beckton United, Basildon United, Billericay Town and Fisher Athletic, a £35,000 move to Maidstone United in March 1989 helped the England semi-pro international on his way. Stones went on to win the Conference that season, earning promotion into the Football League.
