West Bromwich Albion have sacked Ryan Mason with the Championship outfit languishing in 18th place at the halfway stage of the season.

Last night’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City, sealed by a late goal, proved the final straw.

It was the club’s 10th successive away loss and left Mason with a record of just nine wins from his 27 games in charge of the Baggies.

There was an angry reaction from sections of the West Brom travelling support at the final whistle, with calls for the 34-year-old’s dismissal following a 13th league defeat of the campaign.

Frustrations

Mason admitted he understood the frustrations of the fanbase, conceding the performance and result summed up the club’s season.

The West Brom hierarchy have now decided a change is required in the dugout, confirming Mason’s departure in a statement which read: “West Bromwich Albion have today parted company with men’s first team head coach Ryan Mason.

“Assistant head coach Nigel Gibbs and first team coach/head of performance Sam Pooley have also departed The Hawthorns.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan, Nigel and Sam for their efforts and wishes all three the very best for the future.

“First team coach James Morrison will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis until a new staff is appointed.

“The process of recruiting a new men’s first team head coach and staff is under way.”

Succession of coaches

The club narrowly missed out on a play-off place last season, finishing ninth under a succession of coaches, including Carlos Corberan, Chris Brunt, Tony Mowbray and James Morrison, the latter overseeing the run-in.

Mason was appointed in the summer to lead a renewed promotion push in 2025-26, but his reign has been cut short after just six months in charge.

West Brom’s attention now turns to the FA Cup, with a trip to Swansea City this weekend, before returning to league action with a Friday night home clash against promotion-chasing Middlesbrough.
