League One strugglers Port Vale are into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in more than 70 years after boyhood Newcastle United fan Ben Waine scored to stun Premier League Sunderland 1-0.

Five days after getting the goal that knocked out Bristol City, Waine – a New Zealand international whose mum’s family hails from the north east – was at it again as his 28th-minute header gave Vale their first win over top-flight opposition since a fourth-round win over Everton 30 years ago.

Jon Brady’s side sit rock bottom of the third tier, 11 points from safety in a 150th anniversary season that has offered little to celebrate so far, but this will go down as a famous day as they reached the last eight of the FA Cup for the first time since advancing to the semi-finals in 1954.

Elsewhere, Southampton scored a stoppage-time penalty to defeat Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage to cause another fifth-round upset, while Norwich City were knocked out by their former boss Daniel Farke’s Leeds United.

Here is a full roundup of Sunday’s FA Cup action.

Port Vale 1-0 Sunderland

Waine’s header was their only attempt on target in the 90 minutes of this game, but few inside Vale Park cared as the final whistle was greeted with huge celebrations.

Sunderland had made only two changes from the side that beat Leeds in midweek to move up to 11th in the Premier League, but a side featuring more than £150million worth of talent blew the opportunity for the two-time FA Cup winners to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1974.

The visitors could have led four minutes in when Vale goalkeeper Joe Gauci inadvertently punched a corner back across his own goal, but Eliezer Mayenda’s header came back off a post before Kyle John scrambled it behind.

Both sides struggled to put moves together on Vale Park’s poor pitch, but the hosts were at least used to the surface and looked the more comfortable.

Sunderland nerves were laid bare when Waine forced Luke O’Nien into a long-range back pass that left goalkeeper Melker Ellborg – the January signing who only made his debut in Tuesday’s win over Leeds – scrambling before he made an excellent if unorthodox save by heading over his own crossbar.

But that led to two corners and from the second, Vale took the lead.

Waine initially knocked Ethon Archer’s cross down for Dajaune Brown, but when he mishit a shot, it looped back up for Waine to head home the only goal of the game to send the Valiants through to the quarter finals.

Fulham 0-1 Southampton

An intriguing tie looked bound for extra-time until the 90th minute when Saints’ Finn Azaz smartly kept himself onside and was tripped by the trailing boot of Joachim Andersen inside the box.

From the spot, Ross Stewart hammered the ball hard and low into the corner beyond the fingertips of goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte to ensure there will be a Championship team in today’s quarter-final draw.

Fulham believed they were denied a fair goal in the first half when Daniel Peretz blasted a quick goal-kick straight at his own defender and Rodrigo Muniz stabbed in the loose ball.

After a period of confusion, it was established that the goal had been ruled out as the ball had been in motion when the kick was taken, with Fulham appearing far from satisfied by that ruling.

Leo Scienza wasted a wonderful chance to give Saints the lead midway through the first half as he raced through on goal but sent his shot agonisingly wide.

Muniz headed Fulham’s best chance so far over the bar at the start of the second half, then Timothy Castagne bundled the ball into the net for a second time after Peretz failed to hold Andersen’s header, VAR upholding the onfield decision of offside.

Fulham came within a whisker of conceding when Azaz’s shot on the turn was deflected onto the bar and behind by a last-ditch intervention by Jorge Cuenca.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis then produced his own piece of heroic defending to deflect Sessegnon’s pile-driver over the bar, then Peretz saved from an identical position from the same player.

Extra-time looked a certainty until Andersen’s trip and Azaz’s tumble, and Stewart rifled Saints into the last eight.

Leeds United 3-0 Norwich City

Leeds cruised into the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 23 years with a 3-0 win at Elland Road against head coach Daniel Farke’s former club, Norwich.

Sealing their place in the last eight for the first time since 2003 under former manager Terry Venables, the Whites managed to overcome their Championship opponents.

The Canaries failed to reproduce the form that saw them win nine of their previous 11 matches in all competitions.

The home side thought they had taken the lead when Lukas Nmecha turned home a loose ball from inside the penalty area, but the ‘goal’ was ruled out after a VAR intervention for Willy Gnonto’s handball as he challenged Norwich goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw in the build-up.

The Premier League side took a deserved lead, however, as Gabriel Gudmundsson charged on to Gnonto’s pass into the area and pulled the ball back for Sean Longstaff, who swivelled on to his excellent first touch to volley home his first goal since September.

The travelling fans will have been disappointed at their in-form side’s passive first-half display and it got worse for the visitors when Leeds struck their second two minutes before the break.

The best effort of the second half arrived when Joel Piroe’s 20-yard shot hit the crossbar in the 71st minute.

However, Piroe managed to add a third for Leeds following a swift counter-attack, applying a neat finish after Nmecha and substitute Anton Stach had combined to create the opening.
