AFTER Manchester United‘s victory over Arsenal on penalties, the next round of the FA Cup was drawn as Plymouth Argyle will host Premier League side Liverpool.
The Pilgrims achieved one of the upsets of the weekend as Morgan Whittaker’s late strike defeated Brentford 1-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Meanwhile, Arne Slot’s side comfortably dispatched League Two outfit Accrington Stanley at Anfield.
Goals from Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jayden Danns and Federico Chiesa were enough for the Reds to progress.
However, the visitors put up a good fight as boyhood Liverpool fan Josh Woods went the closest for the visitors, striking the bar in the second half.
Fourth-round draw
The other ties for the next round included Exeter City who will take on Premier League high-flyers Nottingham Forest at St James Park.
It will be the first time since 1981 that the Grecians will take part in the fourth round of the cup competition.
“It’s amazing,” City boss Gary Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon.
“It’s obviously brilliant to be in the draw and it’s brilliant to have a Premier League club come to St James Park again.
“We’ll be really excited about it.
“It’s something for our supporters to really look forward to.”
Blues host Magpies
League One leaders Birmingham City will host top English flight side Newcastle United.
The Blues dispatched Lincoln City 2-1 as the Magpies avoided a potential banana skin against Bromley in a 3-1 victory.
Leeds United beat Harrogate Town 1-0 in the first competitive meeting between these two Yorkshire sides.
The Whites could potentially face off against the last Non-League side, Dagenham & Redbridge.
If the Daggers can get past Championship outfit Millwall in tonight’s fixture at The Den, then they will be rewarded with a trip to Elland Road.
In another all-Yorkshire contest, Doncaster Rovers defeated Hull City on penalties.
Rovers will play Premier League Crystal Palace in the next round – after they beat League One Stockport County.
After their game was postponed, one of Leyton Orient or Derby County will face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City – who demolished fourth-tier side Salford City 8-0.
FA Cup Holders to host Foxes
Mansfield Town vs Wigan Athletic was also called off as top-division side Fulham awaits the winner of this all-English third-tier clash.
Blackburn Rovers were drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
John Eustace’s side defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 and the West Midlands side saw off Bristol City 2-1.
Coventry City’s penalty shootout victory over Sheffield Wednesday saw them through into the next round.
