Arsenal Ladies make it to the Continental Cup final for the fifth time running

By Hugo Varley

Arsenal Ladies beat a resilient Birmingham City side in the semi-final of the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup at Meadow Park on Sunday.

Goals from Marta Corredera, Dan Carter and Alex Scott helped the Gunners to a 3-1 victory over their midland opponents.

Arsenal have made the final of the tournament every year since it began in 2011, winning the trophy on three occasions. In this year’s final they will face Notts County at Rotherham United’s New York Stadium on 1 November.

Arsenal captain Alex Scott was delighted with yesterday’s victory and told reporters: “We played great football at times, we showed character to hold on and stick in the game and we showed the fight and determination at the end when things got a bit ugly.

“It’s about all the hard work that goes into the season. You want to come away with some silverware. At Arsenal it’s always been about winning trophies. That was our mentality going into the game, we wanted to get to the final.

“We’ve got a bit of momentum towards the end of the season so we’ll be confident going into the final. It’s pleasing to get to another final,” added Scott.
