Benitez ready to offer summer move to former Huddersfield midfielder

Rafa Benitez has included former Huddersfield midfielder Scott Arfield on his summer transfer wishlist, according to reports.

The Newcastle United boss seems resigned to losing winger Florian Thauvin, who claimed featuring for Marseille in their fixture against Lille last Friday had triggered an appearances clause which gives the French club the option to make his loan move permanent.

Benitez has therefore turned his attention towards Burnley’s Arfield, claims The Sun, with the Canadian international set to enter the remaining 12 months of his contract at Turf Moor.

The versatile midfielder has played the majority of his football on the left-side for the Clarets this season, making 26 appearances in the top flight for the 2015-16 Championship title-winners.

Burnley are thought to be keen to retain the services of Arfield, but talks have yet to reach a stage of firm grounding in negotiations which may allow Benitez to swoop with a cut-price offer.

Newcastle’s manager looks set to make the wings a key area to improve in his summer recruitment plans, as Yoann Gouffran looks likely to be released with his contract due to expire at the end of June.

Arfield, 28, is adept on either wing and was part of Huddersfield’s squad who gained promotion to the Championship in 2012, after an epic 8-7 penalty shootout win over Sheffield United in the play-off final at Wembley.
