Mowbray resigns after 18 months at struggling Coventry City

Coventry boss Tony Mowbray has resigned after 18 months in charge of the stuttering League One side.

After ten games so far, the Sky Blues are yet to win this season, are the second lowest scorers in the division and languish three points adrift at the bottom of the table.

It has been a tough spell for the former Hibernian, West Brom and Middlesbrough manager, and after Wednesday‘s 2-2 draw with Wimbledon, he said: “It’s embarrassing to go 10 games without a win. I’m an honourable guy.

“I have not seen a team better than us but, if you can’t put them in and you can’t keep them out, you’re going to struggle.”

“They worked extremely hard again but it’s a man’s game. They’re babies in a man’s league.

“I probably let them down by not getting the right defender who could have been a man and help us keep clean sheets. But we knew what the budget was and we didn’t get our targets.”

Mowbray took over at the Ricoh Arena in March 2015 from Steven Pressley, and saved them from relegation on the final day of the season, before leading them to the top of the league last December.

However, after the goals of loan duo Adam Armstrong and Jacob Murphy started to dry up, Mowbray’s men slipped out of promotion contention and finished eighth.

And having had to work within a very tight budget, and against a backdrop of fans frustrations against the club’s owners, this season has been difficult to endure for all associated with the club, and Mowbray said: “”I won’t be a burden to this club. I know this club needs every penny.”
