Nelson joins Oxford as three others leave Argyle

Plymouth Argyle captain Curtis Nelson has joined Oxford United on a two-year deal after turning down the chance to stay at Home Park.

Also leaving Argyle are striker Reuben Reid, full-back Kelvin Mellor and forward Tyler Harvey who had all been offered new deals.

Nelson had been the subject of interest from League One play-off winners Barnsley last month, with the Pilgrims rejecting a bid from the Tykes in the hope the 23-year-old would opt to stay.

Nelson becomes the sixth signing of the season for the U’s and is likely to partner Chey Dunkley in Michael Appleton’s defence, considering the exit of Johnny Mullins.

Appleton told United’s official club website: “He’s a good player and another who has played a lot of games for his age. He is a great competitor and a good organiser and I think a lot of Oxford fans will have been impressed when he played against us over the last couple of seasons.

“Plymouth were hoping to keep him but as soon as we found out that he wasn’t going to accept their offer we were keen to get him to Oxford. We are delighted that he has opted to join us ahead of the new season,” Appleton said of Nelson, who made his professional debut at the age of 17 with Argyle.

Nelson explained: “Oxford were one of the outstanding teams we played last season and when I met Michael Appleton and heard the plans they have I knew this was where I wanted to play my football.

“The fans are great and it is a very positive place to be right now. I’m looking forward to working hard in pre-season and having a chance to help the team in League One this season.”

Newly-promoted Oxford begin their 2016/17 campaign at home to Chesterfield, while Derek Adams’ men look to start the season strongly with a home tie against Luton Town.
