Derby County defender Stephen Warnock has swapped one promotion race for another by moving to Wigan Athletic on loan, until the end of the season.
The 34-year-old had been the preferred choice at left-back for Derby under former head coach Paul Clement making 22 appearances, but is yet to feature for the Rams under Darren Wassall.
Warnock joins Wigan four points off 1st spot in the League One table and unbeaten in 14 league matches. Boss Gary Caldwell was hopeful Warnock could add to the Latics momentum with Chris McCann missing the next two games.
“We are struggling a little on the left side of defence with Chris McCann now suspended for two games, we don’t know the time scale on Reece James yet and the opportunity to bring in a player with his quality and experience is a great signing for the rest of season. When we found out Stephen was available it really was a no brainer,” the Scot told the club’s website.
Caldwell added: “He has vast experience having played extensively at the very top level, but he also has great Football League experience in recent years and I think he will really help the squad at a vital time of the season.”
Warnock will be available to face relegation strugglers Colchester United on Saturday, as the Latics try to hunt down Burton Albion atop the League One table.
