EFL basement boys turn to Sol Campbell for relegation battle

Sol Campbell is set to be named as the new manager of Macclesfield Town to take charge of the EFL’s basement boys.

The appointment of the former international defender will mark the end of a six-week search by the Silkmen to find Mark Yates’ replacement, having been sacked last month after a winless start to life back in .

Campbell has most recently been working under England Under-21 head coach Aidy Boothroyd and has been no stranger to club boardrooms over the past year, being unsuccessful in applying for the manager position at United, and Athletic.

But after two years of working to attain his coaching badges the 44-year-old appears set to land his first gig in management.

Veteran midfielder has acting as caretaker boss for the Silkmen after Yates’ exit, where two wins in seven matches haven’t been enough to claw Town back from a seven-point deficit in the relegation zone.

It remains to be seen whether last season’s National League champions will have Campbell in the dugout for next week’s trip to when they take on the Under-21 team in the in midweek.

While there is a wait for a first league match in charge when visit Moss Rose on December 15.
