Guy Branston: Will Still didn’t get results at Southampton, Tonda Eckert has – and that’s that

Like everybody in football, I was really surprised that Will Still didn’t succeed as Southampton’s head coach.

New Southampton boss Tonda Eckert

Like everybody in football, I was really surprised that Will Still didn’t succeed as Southampton’s head coach.

His coaching pedigree, his track record in France, the way he developed young players – all of it said he was an excellent appointment.

Personally, I still maintain he’d have got there given time, but he just didn’t get the results, whereas Tonda Eckert did.

That’s why the 32-year-old German is now the manager of Southampton and he isn’t.

It reminds me of my time at Chesterfield, when they needed a manager and I was the only person in the building with an A-Licence.

I stuck my hand up, took the job and undoubtedly got buy-in from the players. But I didn’t win a game, and that’s all that matters.

So good luck to Tonda. He’s got a beast of a club there and, with a bit of momentum, there’s plenty of time to challenge for promotion.
