When Patrick Bamford emerged from the dugout and jogged down the Elland Road touchline to raucous cheers last Saturday, the irony was not lost on the former England striker.
For the best part of two years, Bamford’s relationship with the Whites’ fanbase has been - at best - strained.
Persistent injuries, poor form and missed chances generated a toxic cloud of hostility that forced the 31-year-old to quit social media and even prompted an isolated threat against his family.
