JOHN Muller, an analytics writer for the Athletic, produced a very interesting piece on what he calls ‘No-Touch Allstars’ this week.
In short, this is the phenomenon whereby players with mediocre or bad statistics are mainstays for their teams.
The player Muller highlighted was Wolves’ Conor Coady, but perhaps the most prominent example is Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, a centre-half widely regarded as the finest in world football yet whose numbers are relatively poor.
