Gillingham appoint Lovell as manager

Gillingham have appointed Steve Lovell as manager on a permanent basis after a successful interim spell in charge

By Jonny Leighfield

Gillingham have named Steve Lovell as the club’s manager until the end of the season.

Lovell took over on an interim basis following the departures of Ady Pennock and Peter Taylor and publicly expressed his desire to take the job on permanently.

While in temporary charge, the 57-year-old picked up eight points from five league games while also guiding the Kent club into the second round of the FA Cup.

Lovell was also nominated for October’s League One Manager of the Month award.

The self-confessed Gillingham fan oversaw a memorable 7-5 victory over Reading Under-23’s to reach the knockout stage of the EFL Trophy last week and will take charge of his first league game as permanent boss on Saturday when The Gills travel to Walsall.
