Jared Borgetti: Bolton Wanderers deserve a Premier League return

Former Mexico and Bolton Wanderers forward Jared Borgetti is thrilled by his old club’s recent promotion back to the Championship, insisting the historic side deserves to be playing in the top flight.

Former Mexico and Bolton Wanderers forward Jared Borgetti is thrilled by his old club’s recent promotion back to the Championship, insisting the historic side deserves to be playing in the top flight.

Borgetti, who spent the 2005-06 season with the Trotters under Sam Allardyce, reflected on the club’s hard-fought journey back up the divisions following severe financial turbulence, while sharing his amusement at the stark cultural differences he faced upon arriving in England.

He recalled his surprise at Allardyce’s hands-off approach during early weekday training sessions, while also admitting that while local cuisine like fish and chips didn’t completely blow him away, adapting to heavy British pints was a much bigger challenge than adjusting to the food.

History

Bolton secured promotion back to the Championship with a thumping 4-1 victory in the playoff final over Stockport County and the trotters are now preparing for a first second tier campaign since 2019.

In an exclusive interview with 10bet, former Bolton forward Borgetti revealed his delight with the club’s promotion and hopes to see them return back to the top flight.

He explained “Unfortunately, due to some financial and other problems at Bolton, the club has dropped several divisions, but little by little they have been progressing with good projects, working hard and obviously doing things the right way.

“I’m happy that they’ve been promoted again, are in the Championship, and hopefully the next season will be a good one, a great one, and they can reach the Premier League again.

“It’s a club with a lot of history, one of the oldest in England, and they deserve to be in the Premier League.”

Adapting

When asked about his own time in the Premier League with Bolton, Borgetti shared “Seeing that a coach in England, Allardyce, although he always went to the club’s training sessions, but participated little in the training during the week, only showing up a couple of days before the game, well, that was something new for me.

“But it’s part of the idea and the way they work in England, and that’s how they’re used to getting ahead. It was something totally new for me, and you have to adapt to those situations.”

The former Mexican international also shared funny stories regarding the food and drink culture shock he experienced.

“To be honest, I didn’t try much English food. fish and chips…it’s not exactly something that would make me say “wow,” but I did try it, and it’s actually quite good.

“But as long as there’s international food, anything goes, everything’s fine, so the food wasn’t the problem, and besides, I don’t usually have problems with food in other countries.

“Obviously, the beers are a different story (laughs). Of course, there were the beers; I managed to have a few, and they were pretty good (laughs).

“You have to get used to drinking those kinds of beers, which are different from the ones we drink in Mexico, and you’re left with that different flavor.

“And well, no, the Saturday pie, I didn’t get to try it.”
