Carlos Carvalhal departs Sheffield Wednesday

Carlos Carvalhal departs Sheffield Wednesday

Carlos Carvalhal has reached the end of the road with Sheffield Wednesday as club and head coach part company after 131 games in charge over two-and-a-half-years at the club. The Portuguese had racked up 56 victories in that time.

Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Middlesbrough appears to be the straw that broke the Camel’s back. That said, victory wasn’t enough to save the opposition manager, Garry Monk who was also dismissed on that Saturday evening. Paulo Fonseca is the clear favourite at 2/1 to replace Carvalhal, Skybet have Paul Lambert in second place at 5/2. Coach Lee Bullen who took over the short term reigns on Boxing day when Wednesday travelled to Nottingham Forest is at 5/1.

We will have to wait and see what the longer term plans for the club are.

Carvalhal had guided Sheffield Wednesday into the play-offs during the past two seasons but today Sheffield Wednesday are sat in 15th position in the Championship table, and were in danger of getting sucked into the relegation battle so took steps towards change.

Carlos Carvalhal spoke on the club’s official website, and said: “I am very sad at this moment because I have enjoyed my two seasons and a half so much with Sheffield Wednesday.”

“We had two fantastic seasons and two play-offs on the row but unfortunately we have not managed to replicate these positions this season.”

Sheffield Wednesday currently have 27 points, 17 points off Derby County in 3rd place. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire club are only 10 points off the bottom club, Birmingham City.

Wednesday without a single victory in seven games have lost their last three in the Championship, confidence has been sapped out of the team. It doesn’t make it any easier for the supporters when local rivals Sheffield United are eight places above them in the table on 38 points.

At the end of September, the league positions between the two clubs were in full effect. Sheffield United running out 4-2 winners at Hillsborough. The two lock horns again on the 12th January at Bramall Lane.

The club had earlier published a detailed epilogue from the chairman, Dejphon Chansiri in which he referred to the treatment of the head coach by the Wednesday supporters, and contemplated his future in South Yorkshire.

That was superseded by the statement which confirmed the exit.

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri said: “Both parties believe the time is right to go our separate ways.”

“I maintain a huge amount of respect for Carlos as a coach and as a person and he will always be welcome at Hillsborough.”

Daniel Pudil, the Sheffield Wednesday left-back has paid tribute to Carlos Carvalhal following his departure from Hillsborough.

“I would like to say a big thanks to Carlos Carvalhal for what he has done for us, for Sheffield Wednesday.

“Under his management, the team was successful for two seasons and he was trying hard to bring our club to Premier League.

“I wish him good luck in his future career and I am sure he will be beneficial for his future team too. Big clap for you.”
