Whatmough injury could have been much worse

defender Jack Whatmough faces two months on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury against , but it could have been worse for the young defender.

The 19-year-old, who came up through the youth ranks at Fratton Park, was out for 10 months after suffering cruciate ligament damage in 2015 , and there were fears this injury was a recurrence of his previous troubles.

However scans have revealed that although serious, his injury is independent to the one he suffered last March.

The injury will be a blow to Whatmough, after gaining just his third start under Paul on Saturday, but he will certainly be relieved it isn’t more cruciate problems.

Portsmouth first-team coach Ian Foster said: “It’s disappointing for Jack as he has worked really hard to get himself back into the side.

“There’s lots of support for Jack here at the club. Hopefully, he will get himself back on the pitch in no time.”

Adam Barton is set to deputise for Whatmough at this evening as Pompey continue their search for a first win of the season.
