Lambert set to leave Blackburn

Blackburn Rovers head coach Paul Lambert has triggered a release clause in his contract that entitles his to leave the club at the end of the season.

Lambert joined Rovers in November following the sacking of Gary Bowyer and will take charge of his last game when Reading visit Ewood park on 7 May.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to the owners, and especially the players, staff and fans for the tremendous backing and support I have received since I arrived,” the Scot told the club’s website.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to the owners, and especially the players, staff and fans for the tremendous backing and support I have received since I arrived,” Lambert added.

The 46-year-old former Norwich and Aston Villa manager has been unable to turnaround Rovers’ fortunes with impetus under the club ownership stalling. On the field performances have been lacklustre and see them lie 18th in the Championship table, while in the boardroom £83m has been wiped off the value of the club’s shares – leading the Rovers Trust to describe the 1995 Premiership winners as ‘completely worthless’.

Blackburn have confirmed they have prompted a search for Lambert’s replacement.
