‘Distraught’ Hyam apologises for Judge tackle

Ipswich Town midfielder hopes to call Irish international after fractured leg confirmed by Brentford

Luke Hyam said he was ‘distraught’ to see Brentford winger Alan Judge stretchered off with a fractured leg, after his tackle in the 2nd minute at Portman Road.

Judge required oxygen on the pitch, and is now in hospital in London, as he and Hyam challenged for a loose ball in a match that Brentford would win 3-1.

Hyam, 24, expressed his thoughts after the game, saying: “There was nothing malicious in the tackle and I hope Alan recovers quickly.

“I’ve been out injured for a year myself and the last thing I want to see is a fellow pro getting injured like that. I would never wish that on anyone.

“I feel distraught over it. It was distressing to see and definitely affected me. My head had gone,” Hyam told Ipswich’s website.

As the game approached half-time, Hyam’s part was brought to an end as he picked up a second yellow card for retaliating against a Brentford player.

“I know the Brentford lads were getting into me but I should never have reacted the way I did to get sent-off, which was obviously disappointing on my part.”

“My thoughts are with Alan though. I’d like to contact him in a day or so and just give him my best and say how sorry I am that he has got injured like that. I just hope he’s back playing as soon as possible.

A statement released by Brentford read: “The nature of his management and long-term prognosis cannot be speculated on at this time. However, it should be stated that a full recovery is not in question.”
