In this week’s edition of The Football League Paper Podcast, Matt Badcock is joined by Football League Paper Chief Writer Chris Dunlavy and John Lyons, Football League Paper Editor, to talk through all the latest in the EFL.
Championship
Southampton progressed into the play-off final at the expense of Middlesbrough after a battling 210 minutes of football across the two legs, with Shea Charles’ 116th-minute winner sending the Saints to Wembley with a 2-1 victory.
However, accusations that Southampton spied on Boro’s preparations ahead of the opening clash at the Riverside Stadium have soured the contest, with the EFL charging the Saints over the incident and likely to impose repercussions in the coming days.
Depending on the outcome of the EFL’s investigation, Southampton will face Hull City for a place in the Premier League next season.
After a goalless first leg at the MKM Stadium, the Tigers put on an excellent display to defeat Millwall at the Den, running out 2-0 winners courtesy of goals from Mohamed Belloumi and Joe Gelhardt.
League One
In League One, Bolton Wanderers travel to Bradford City in the second leg of their semi-final clash, with the Trotters taking a slender one-goal lead into the match.
Whoever progresses will face Stockport County in the final, after they bested Stevenage 3-0 on aggregate to book their place at Wembley.
League Two
Finally, in League Two, Salford City will face off against Grimsby Town, while Notts County hosts Chesterfield.
Both home sides have a one-goal advantage over their opponents, with Salford winning 2-1 in the reverse tie, while Notts County edged out the Spirerites with a 1-0 victory.
