In this week’s edition of The Football League Paper Podcast, Jon Couch is joined by Football League Paper Chief Writer Chris Dunlavy and John Lyons, Football League Paper Editor, to talk through all the latest in the EFL.
The final round of the regular season is upon us, and there are plenty of key battles still to be decided on what should be a dramatic day across the EFL.
Championship
In the Championship, the fight for automatic promotion will go down to the wire, as Ipswich Town, Millwall, and Middlesbrough vie for a spot in the Premier League next season.
Current front-runners, Ipswich, have a one-point advantage over Millwall in third place, and a two-point gap over Middlesbrough in fourth.
The battle for a place in the play-offs will be equally as intriguing as Wrexham looks to hold off the chasing pack of Hull City and Derby County to retain the final spot in the top six.
The Red Dragons sit level on 70 points with Hull, with just a one-goal advantage over the Tigers, while Derby, who sit two points adrift, could leapfrog both clubs should they beat Sheffield United and both teams above them lose.
League One
In League One, it’s another three-way scrap for the final play-off spot as Stevenage, Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle go toe-to-toe on the last day.
The Pilgrims have to make up a two-point deficit on Stevenage in sixth place, while Luton, who have a greater goal difference over the Boro, sit just one point away.
At the bottom of the table, Exeter City sit two points adrift of safety, a spot which is currently held by Leyton Orient.
Exeter hosts promotion-hopefuls Bradford City on the final day, while Orient welcomes Burton Albion to the BetWright Stadium.
League Two
The battle for the League Two title will be decided between MK Dons and Bromley. Both teams have already secured automatic promotion to League One, but it’s the ultimate glory they will be seeking as the two clubs are separated by just one point, with the Dons sitting at the top of the league on 85 points.
They travel to Fleetwood Town, while Bromley hosts Walsall. Cambridge United will be keen to retain the last automatic promotion place with a victory away at Crewe Alexandra.
But hot on their tails are Salford City and Notts County, who sit one point and two points behind Cambridge, respectively. Barnet and Swindon Town will be aiming to break into the play-offs on Saturday afternoon.
Chesterfield currently holds the final spot, and could drop out of the top seven should they fail to beat Swindon on the road and either of the two chasing pack record victories.
At the other end of the table, it’s a five-way battle for survival in the Football League. Tranmere Rovers and Newport County sit on 40 points, while Crawley Town and Harrogate Town sit behind them on 39 points.
Basement side Barrow will need to win big against Newport if they want to bridge the three-point gap and four-goal gap deficit over Harrogate.
