Dream Team: Iain Hume (Preston North End)

IAIN HUME  – The Preston striker chooses his favourite XI, made up from   players he has played with or against in his football career.

GOALKEEPER
John Achterberg – Retired

He was one of the best shot-stoppers I’ve played with and he won us points on his own at Tranmere. As a keeper he was just brilliant to have behind you because you knew you could rely on him.

RIGHT BACK

Ryan Taylor – Newcastle United

He could move forward, no problem, but would defend well too. He was great at set-pieces and in general he was an all-round good player, which is why he is doing as well as he is today.

LEFT BACK
Gareth Roberts – Bury

He was a similar player to Ryan, but he was an absolute beast, strong as an ox and loved to get forward but defensively was brilliant – and never left his position when ­needed.

CENTRE BACK
Rob Jones – Doncaster

I only played with him for one season last year, but for a centre half to score eight goals and win everything in the air is a bit special. He’s a big bloke and probably the hardest man that I’ve played with in football. He wouldd be my captain.

CENTRE BACK
Sean St Ledger – Leicester

He’s just a footballing centre half who loves to get a foot on the ball. I played against him before I played with him and he’s one of the hardest players I’ve played against in positional terms, purely because he’s quick and strong. He’s played for Ireland umpteen times and deservedly so.

RIGHT MIDFIELD
Paul Hall – Retired

I played with him at Tranmere and he was towards the end of his playing days then but he still had the quality. He was good on the ball, had a great delivery and in my eyes was a top class out-and-out winger.

LEFT MIDFIELD
David Cotterill – Doncaster Rovers

I think he scored ten goals last season and ended up with 23 assists, to have that from a winger is nothing short of ­phenomenal. I think if any manager could get that from his winger then they would be absolutely made up.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD
Atiba Hutchinson – Besiktas

I’ve played with him since I was seven years old and I still play with him for Canada. He’s probably the best Canadian footballer that’s ever been born. He’s your typical box-to-box midfielder who can play some really good stuff. He’s got everything.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD
Julian de Guzman – Skoda Xanthi

Technically, with the ball at his feet, he’s one of the best players I have ever played with. He and Atiba have played together for years and they’re just the best partnership so it would be wrong to break them up.

STRIKER
Matty Fryatt – Sheffield Wednesday (on loan from Hull City)

He was the best partner that I’ve ever played with and he was the perfect example of what you want from a strike partner. He works hard, he’s good on the ball and he’s just a sublime finisher.

STRIKER
Tomasz Radzinski – Retired

I played with him for Canada and he is rapid. He only finished playing just over a year ago at 38 years old and he was still probably the quickest lad in that team. And the best thing about him was his finishing. He had an absolute cannon of a shot. He was just a great lad and a great player to play with.
