Chris Dunlavy: Championship play-off expansion keeps the promotion dream alive

With Tony Mowbray backing the move, Chris Dunlavy argues that extending the Championship play-offs gives more clubs something meaningful to fight for and supporters a reason to keep dreaming.

Lyle Taylor, the former AFC Wimbledon and Charlton Athletic striker, reckons the expansion of the Championship play-offs to six teams is unfair.
“If you’re talking about going down to eighth, you could have a team with ten or 11 fewer wins than the one finishing third,” he told the BBC this week.
“Are you therefore deserving of being in the same post-season competition as that team? No, this is a meritocracy, isn’t it?”
Taylor wasn’t alone. Pundits, players, managers and coaches have been lining up to decry the new system. But not Tony Mowbray.
