Mic for refs? Give them to managers and coaches too

A FRESH TAKE ON FOOTBALL

Should referees be forced to wear a microphone? That’s the suggestion of Nigel Pearson, who says the move would make officials more accountable.

“I think it would be better for the game if there was transparency as to what the process is when decisions are made,” said the Bristol City boss. “I don’t know why they don’t do that. Maybe they’re afraid?”

Maybe, and with good reason. Just because the process is transparent doesn’t mean everybody will agree with the decision. It certainly won’t stop the abuse of officials.

So if we’re going to mic up refs, let’s also mic up managers and coaches. That way, we can all hear the stick they’re dishing out to the lino and the fourth official. That, too, might give us a clearer understanding of a referee’s decision-making process.
