Free speech comes at cost we must bear

THE white banner unfurled by Switzerland’s players on a September evening in 1995 was pretty slapdash. Its ramifications, however, would prove profound.
Earlier that day, French President Jacques Chirac had ordered a nuclear test on Mururoa Atoll, a barren rock 12,000 kilometers south of Tahiti. The world was outraged - and so, it seems, were Swiss footballers.
