Huddersfield Town hope to get ‘back on track’ after sacking Lee Grant

Huddersfield Town dismissed manager Lee Grant this weekend following a disappointing run of results that culminated in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Burton Albion.

The decision, confirmed last night, brings an end to Grant’s tenure after just three wins from the club’s last 12 league games.

The Terriers have struggled for consistency this season, failing to build momentum in their push for automatic promotion from League One and a return to the Championship at the second attempt.

Grant, who was appointed in May 2025, oversaw a major summer rebuild backed by American owner and chairman Kevin Nagle, with the aim of improving on last season’s disappointing 10th-place finish.

Back on track

Arrivals, including Alfie May from Birmingham City, Lynden Gooch from Stoke City and Jack Whatmough from Preston North End, were designed to strengthen the squad, while Leo Castledine impressed on loan from Chelsea before joining Middlesbrough last week.

However, with the club clinging to a play-off place in sixth, Nagle said the club felt they had little choice but to act with nearly half of the campaign still to play.

“Entering this season with renewed optimism and hope having proactively reshaped our first team throughout the summer, we were clear about not only our ambitions but how we wanted to achieve them, and the type of team on the pitch we wanted to enjoy alongside our supporters,” he said in a club statement announcing the departure of Grant.

“Sadly, on current form, none of those objectives are being met and, with just under half of the season remaining, we feel no other option but to make a change to put the side back on track.

“I would like to thank Lee for his efforts and wish him nothing but the best for his future career.”

Difficult

Nagle added that the club’s aims for the season remain unchanged, with sporting director Chris Markham now tasked with leading the search for a new manager.

Huddersfield have yet to announce any interim arrangements as they look to arrest their slide and reignite a promotion push.

Speaking after the disappointing defeat to Burton, and before his exit, Grant said: “We created moments, but we didn’t take them.

“There has to be more from within, spirit, collective energy and character to go and take that game and put a side that we know we can be better than, to the sword.

“For me, it comes down to the fight and the duels. Winning the second balls and the spirit, and if we don’t get that right, any game can be difficult, and today is a case in point.”

Next up for the Terriers is a tough contest against third-placed side Bradford City at home.
