Charlton snap up Jonny Williams from near neighbours Crystal Palace

Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams on a six-month deal.

The 25-year-old becomes the first player to sign for Charlton in the January transfer window, ending a 17-year career at Selhurst Park.

The Wales international told the club’s official website: “They are a good, talented bunch of players.

“I’m hopeful to add to that and I’m excited to work with them and hopefully get the club back into the Championship, which is the main aim.”

In a move that manager Lee Bowyer said would improve the Addicks’ effectiveness in the final third, greater significance could be placed on the transfer activity being made at The Valley amidst takeover talks between owner Roland Duchatelet and an Australian consortium.

Bowyer added: “He’s a very good player. He’s good in possession, he’s clever, he works hard and he’s everything that I want from a midfield player. He can play in different positions, so he’s versatile as well.

“The end product, something we need to improve on in the final third, he has that. He has the cleverness to see those little passes, so I’m very, very happy.”

Williams could be in line for his first appearance as a Charlton player against the club he spent time on loan at last season in Saturday’s opponents Sunderland.

Despite the tender agreement of a six-month contract, his arrival at The Valley offers a glimmer of hope that takeover talks are moving in the right direction 11 months on from when they began.
