Leicester City docked six points after breaching EFL profit and sustainability rules

Leicester City have been docked six points after being found to have breached EFL profit and sustainability (P&S) rules for the 2023-24 season.

An independent commission recommended the sanction, which was ratified by the EFL board on Thursday.

The Premier League appointed the commission last May after an arbitration tribunal ruled it could investigate alleged EFL rule breaches following the Foxes’ 2024 promotion to the top flight.

The commission determined the club had breached the relevant P&S threshold by £20.8million over the three-year assessment period ending 2023-24.

Deduction

The commission also found the Foxes breached Premier League rules by failing to provide their annual accounts when requested to do so.

“On consideration of all relevant factors, the Commission has recommended a deduction of six points.

“The EFL Board has met to consider the decision and determined that the sanction should be applied to the Championship table with immediate effect.”

Disappointment

Leicester said in a statement: “It is with disappointment that Leicester City acknowledges the independent commission’s decision and the club will use the time available to consider its next steps.”

The club said the commission’s recommended points sanction “remains disproportionate” and fails to fully consider the mitigating factors or their potential impact on this season’s sporting ambitions.

The statement concluded: ”We are now reviewing the decision in full and considering the options available to us.

”We remain committed to engaging constructively and ensuring that any action is fair, proportionate and determined through the appropriate processes.”

Leicester avoided a points deduction for alleged breaches of the top flight’s profitability and sustainability rules for the 2022-23 season after the club won its appeal in September 2024.

Relegation

An appeal board found in that instance the independent commission appointed under Premier League rules did not have jurisdiction over the club, because it ruled the 2022-23 accounting period ended a month and two days after the club’s relegation from the top flight.

As a result of their financial situation, the club were unable to spend any money on transfer fees in the January transfer window just gone.

Former Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles joined on a free and Joe Aribo, Divine Mukasa and Dujuan Richards have all joined on loan.

The points deduction plunges Leicester to 20th, just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Next, they travel to Birmingham City, aiming to claw back points and escape a potential relegation battle.
