Free agent Wes Brown is set to train with Blackburn Rovers over their pre-season schedule.
Brown, who made over 200 appearances for Manchester United, was released by Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce in May and Owen Coyle has opted to give the defender a chance to earn a permanent deal with Rovers.
Blackburn found goals hard to come by last season, scoring just 46 goals in the Championship, an issue Coyle has acted swiftly to address by bringing Danny Graham and Anthony Stokes to the club.
Rovers defence was more impressive proving to be harder to beat than those of play-off chasers Cardiff (51), Ipswich (51) and Brentford (67).
36-year-old Brown is one of many players Coyle has been considering to bolster the defensive ranks following the release of Tommy Spurr and Matthew Kilgallon.
The former Burnley boss’ preference in the transfer market thus far looks to err on the side of experience with Graham, Stokes and recent signing Liam Feeney all no younger than 29.
Despite this, Brown’s increasing proneness to injury is sure to be of concern with his limited availability for the Black Cats a reason for this exit, after failing to make an appearance since 23 January.
