Mowatt’s agent yet to receive any contact from Leeds over new contract

Leeds United are yet to engage with the representative of midfielder Alex Mowatt, despite manager Steve Evans claiming talks had occurred regarding a new deal.

The clock on the 21-year-old’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2017, along with fellow Leeds prospects Charlie Taylor and Lewis Cook.

Evans said last week of negotiations with the trio, “I think we won’t be going into next season with them only having one season left.”

Yet in a follow-up interview Mowatt’s agent Mark Rankine confirmed no approach had been made by the executives at Elland Road.

Asked whether he had received any contact, Rankine told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Absolutely none whatsoever. Nobody has spoken to me about it (a new contract), or to Alex.”

Leeds do appear keen to hold on to their academy stars with Lewie Coyle, Lewis Walters and Tyler Denton all signing new deals last summer. As well as rebuffing enquiries by Bournemouth about the availability of promising midfielder Lewis Cook in January.

Anxieties over losing their young stars were given more bearing with the sale of Sam Byram to West Ham in January after repeated negotiations had stalled.

A statement released by Leeds last week revealed they had considerably reduced financial losses despite paying £17.4m to first-team players and staff between June 2014-June 2015.
