Dagenham & Redbridge dump Wimbledon out of the FA Cup

Dagenham and Redbridge dumped League Two side AFC Wimbledon out of the FA Cup by 2-1 at Plough Lane.

The National League side earned their third-round spot with goals from Junior Morias and Josh Rees.

Match Action

The hosts had the better opening, and James Tilley saw his effort on seven minutes blocked by Romoney Crichlow after a James Furlong cross.

The game had a delay as referee Craig Hicks was forced off injured, although Wimbledon continued to press.

Dagenham started to find their footing in the contest, and they stunned their League One hosts on 34 minutes, when following a break a long-range effort from Morias was out of reach of keeper Owen Goodman.

Furlong was guilty of shooting straight at Elliott Justham in first half injury time, but Matty Stevens bundled home past the Dagenham keeper for the equaliser before the break.

Dagenham almost had the perfect second half start after a minute, when a Josh Umerah backflick went just wide of the post.

James Tilley put a 55th minute free kick over the crossbar, although the home side looked flat.

Dagenham scored the winning goal on 79 minutes when Rees turned the ball home through a crowd of players following a corner.

It was a second League Two scalp for the east London side after defeating Crewe in the first round, and a clearly happy Strevens reflected on their win.

From the managers

He said “We had a tough game at Crewe and we had to do the same thing tonight.

“I’ve been told their goal was offside so all in all the boys deserved it.

“Being able to talk calmly to them at half time and getting them back together is easier than if it’s on sixty minutes.

“It was amazing scenes at the end with the supporters, they really enjoyed it.”

Wimbledon looked flat throughout, and manager Johnnie Jackson could not hide his bitter disappointment.

He said “We’re out of the cup, we obviously wanted to go through, we knew it was going to be a difficult game.

“They came up to frustrate, which they did and they did it well. They had two shots on target.

“They’re poor goals on our end, I thought we continued to push and dominated the ball but didn’t capitalise on those moments.”
