The Kings of the League: The most dominant teams and players in EPL history

Top

The Premier League is a battlefield where only the best teams come out on top. Since its beginnings, the Premier League has been home to elite teams known to conquer the field and the hearts of many. Explore the world of Europe’s most prestigious football league and be introduced to its champions.

What is the Premier League?

The English Premier League (EPL) is Europe’s most prestigious football league. It is known for having some of the best matches, like the legendary Liverpool 4-3 New Castle (1995-96) League and the famous Manchester City 3-2 QPR (2011-12).

Today, the Premier League remains popular all around the world. It became one of the most anticipated leagues for avid fans and live football betting gamblers.

How it started

In the 1980s, English football faced significant challenges, including fan violence (commonly known as hooliganism), poor stadium conditions, and financial struggles. This period included the Heysel Disaster, a tragic event where a section of the Heysel Stadium collapsed during a Liverpool versus Juventus match. Before it happened, fans of both teams were reported to have violent clashes with each other.

In this unfortunate event, 39 fans passed away, and 600 others were injured. Because of the disaster, English clubs were banned from entering European competitions for five years (six for Liverpool).

In 1991, the top English clubs decided they needed a new league with a better overall structure. In February 1992, the Premier League was officially formed. The new league had better financial distribution, global broadcasting rights, commercial opportunities, and improved safety standards.

The Premier League today

With the Premier League being more established today, their influence in football has led to the sport’s growth. Now that football has become more popular internationally, more fans and athletes are getting involved in the EPL.

Manchester United (13 titles)

Manchester United owns the most EPL titles in its history, and no team has come close to achieving the number of their titles. With 13 trophies under their name, they are considered the most dominant team in EPL history.

They were also the team to hold the first Premier League championship title in 1992 and held it until Blackburn Rovers took the title from them.

Manchester City (8 titles)

Despite only getting their first championship title in 2012, Manchester City holds the second most wins in the history of EPL. They have eight trophies in total and are currently the title holder of the most recent EPL championship (2023-24).

Their very first EPL win of Manchester City was against the dominant Manchester United, the team with the most wins in the EPL, to which they ended the game 1-6.

Chelsea (5 titles)

Chelsea is among the EPL’s top three teams, with five titles. They have shown their impressive performances multiple times, securing back-to-back victories in the EPL from 2004 to 2006. They are known for their aggressive playstyle, which focuses on the offensive rather than the defence.

Their most recent win in the 2016-17 EPL against Manchester United was one of the most intense battles, as they left the elite team with zero points scored. The game ended in 4-0 in favour of Chelsea F.C.

Arsenal (3 titles)

Arsenal is one of the pioneer teams that got their first win during the early times of the EPL. They are the 4th in the top league teams with three titles secured. For their first trophy, they had to defeat Manchester United in the finals, where they scored 3-2 to conclude the game.

The first half of the 1997-98 season ended in a draw, and this pushed them to strike harder in hopes of bringing down Manchester United in the finals. Their efforts weren’t in vain, as they won and brought home the title for the first time.

Blackburn Rovers (1 title)

Blackburn Rovers is the second team to take home an EPL championship title. After Manchester United won the first and second EPLs, Blackburn Rovers snatched the title in the 1994-95 EPL finals. This win remained their only first up to this day.

Leicester City (1 title)

One of the rising stars of the EPL is Leicester City. During the 2015-16 EPL season, the team defied all odds as they brought home their first EPL title after they saved themselves from being relegated. Their match against Manchester United ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving them dependent on close rivals Tottenham Hotspurs losing their game to drop crucial league points—and Tottenham did.

Liverpool (1 title)

Liverpool is one of the most recent EPL title holders. They won their first trophy in 2020 against Manchester City, and the game concluded 3-1 in favour of Liverpool. Their intense gameplay that leaned on high-intensity pressing, fast transitions, and attacking full-backs led to their victory.
