Why the British may be falling back in love with bingo

Maybe you think that bingo’s days are numbered. Maybe you believe that this game is only for seniors. You are probably not the only one. However, contrary to popular belief, bingo is still one of the most popular games in Great Britain, adored by people of all generations. Although it made its way to British people back in the 1700s, it wasn’t until the 20th century that it really became popular. In the early 1960s thanks to the big changes to the gambling laws and the growth of television, bingo’s popularity exploded. During that decade a lot of cinemas and theatres were transformed into bingo halls. This game was especially popular amongst working class people and easily became their favourite form of entertainment. Apart from bingo halls, the game also made its way into holiday camps, men’s clubs and even church halls. Everyone wanted a piece of the bingo cake. At one point there were about 2.000 bingo halls in Britain! However, during the last few decades its popularity dropped, that is, until recently. The ability to enjoy this game online gave bingo a huge boost, and it once again became Britain’s sweetheart.

Everyone’s favourite pastime

The moment the online version became available, a whole new generation of players switched onto the game. Nowadays, people of all ages enjoy playing bingo, from teens to seniors. This new type of bingo affected not only the way people play it, but also when they play it. Instead of sitting in a bingo hall at a certain time of the day, a player can start a game in the morning, evening or even in the middle of the night.

It became accessible

Bingo fans can play it on various devices, from computers and laptops, to tablets and smartphones. Instead of getting dressed and going out, you can enjoy a bingo session on your couch while wearing your pyjamas! This feature is mostly responsible for the extreme growth of bingo’s popularity. Nowadays, bingo sites offer various types of this game. If you are interested in exploring the world of different bingo games, click here for more details.

Bingo clubs

Although moving bingo online drastically increased the number of players, the Internet is not the only one responsible for this boom. In fact, since numerous types of venues started incorporating bingo with other entertainment forms, a completely new demographic became attracted to the game. Some venues realised that not all players want to sit in silence and wait for the caller to say something. Therefore, apart from traditional bingo reserved usually for an older generation of devotees, some venues also have a lounge area with a much more relaxed atmosphere. Here players can play on electronic tablets, chat with other players, and even listen to music. You can even find a place in London where the atmosphere is more like a party in Ibiza than an old school bingo game. Here players receive bingo cards and have the chance to win prizes, but they can also enjoy a club-like vibe with the confetti, DJs and lights.

Cheap fun

Two decades ago seeing a student in a bingo hall was nearly impossible. However, it seems that times have really changed. Nowadays, in some places students make up 20% of the customer base. Since food and drinks at these events are often cheap, this may be the reason why students have become so interested in the game.

Bingo has certainly evolved through the decades, and it seems like it is not going away any time soon. At least in the Great Britain.
