GORDON Armstrong believes Sunderland should never have found themselves in the Third Division for the first time in the club’s history.
The Black Cats were relegated from Division One in 1985 then flirted with the drop from Division Two the following campaign. In 1987 they were relegated for the second time in three seasons, losing a promotion/relegation semi-final playoff to Gillingham.
